Chancellor to announce help for the UK self-employed on Thursday, amidst nation-wide lockdown

A Big theme of Prime Minister’s Questions today was the fate of those members of the British public who are self-employed.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Boris Johnson faced even more pressure to introduce measures to help self-employed people in the UK during this crisis.

It has now been announced that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, will announce at the daily briefing on Thursday that help for the self-employed will be announced.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn questioned the PM in the Commons for his last time as leader of the opposition. Corbyn brought up a specific case of a construction worker, to push for help for self-employed:

‘A self-employed man who knew he had coronavirus had to go to work on a construction site because he had no other source of income to feed his family.’

Many other members of parliament addressed self-employment within their questions towards Boris Johnson, including Ian Blackford

of the SNP, who was asking why more protections for these workers weren’t put in place before the start of the nation-wide lockdown.

The Prime Minister responded by saying that the government is currently working as fast as they possibly can to get the appropriate support for everyone.
