The BBC will cut 450 jobs as part of a bid to save tens of millions of pounds, the corporation’s director of news has announced.
Fran Unsworth, the BBC’s director of news and current affairs, said the corporation was covering too many news stories a day, and needed to work smarter.
She said there would be a shift in focus to digital.
The plan unveiled on Wednesday afternoon, according to sources at the meeting, would see the loss of 450 jobs, a cut to Newsnight’s film budget and a reduction in the number of presenters.
There will also be job losses at 5Live and some programmes on World Service English will go.
